I work in a new-home subdivision in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There are a couple of lawns that really stand out: tall, thick, dense. What’s the secret to something like this? Is it fertilizer, extra water, mowing technique, added sand? I know next to nothing about lawn care.

That lawn has been way over-topdressed, likely with excessive sand. It’s too high against the curb/driveway. Not sure if they like that look, but it’s always to have yellow-y dead root edges…

The goal is to have green edges. Dirt is to tall

    Pretty but not perfect

You give the grass the perfect environment and nutrients that it needs.

That person reel mows and (might) use PGR. Hard to be 100p certain if I can see circular scalp marks or not. I bet they have a Fiskers. My lawn never gets higher than .5 inches with my reel mower.

Cut high, sharp blades, overseed every year. Dont be a cheap ass

This is a calling card of a good zoysia lawn.

  7. This is hilarious. Grass isn’t supposed to look like this. It should be level with the pavement.

Anyways the trick to thick green lawn is water, time and money. Its just a weed afterall.

Imo, would edge this lawn with corten steel edging.

It’s not tall, the soil layer is tall. Giving that appearance of tall grass

Organic top soil in late Feb early march. Weed and Feed, lots of water too and mow high. Definitely will build depth and get her looking…

Bermuda is the most popular grass type in Texas due to its tolerance to heat and low maintenance. I noticed some people saying to mow it high… you don’t want to mow Bermuda high (2.5” max). Bermuda is considered a weed in some states but very popular to some as well. It primarily spreads through rhizomes and stolons though it is also capable of seeding. Regular mowing at the proper height encourages it to spread and grow. It is great at taking over bare spots and will outcompete most anything with your help. Bermuda typically stays dormant until later than some other grasses so by encouraging it to come out of dormancy earlier and encouraging it to not go dormant sooner you increase its growth season and keep it strong and healthy.

Ngl – that’s not tall…. but Jonathan Greene and Andersons seed will give you the nice tall and thick bush you want…

In the case of the picture, let thatch build up for several years and mow a bit higher.

Personally I hate the look where turf is so much higher than the sidewalk/driveway. Looks like a river cutting a canyon.
